EcoDrive OBD: an eco-driving score that accounts for the slope

An Android app that reads your car's real fuel consumption through a Bluetooth OBD-II dongle, and scores eco-driving while taking the slope into account.

OBD measurement methods, depending on what the car exposes

The idea

Eco-driving apps punish climbing and reward descending. EcoDrive compares real consumption with what a physical model (mass, rolling resistance, aerodynamics) predicts for the current speed and slope. Climbing a hill isn't penalised; accelerating downhill is.

What it does

  • Instant and average consumption (L/100 km, L/h when idle)
  • Altitude from the phone's barometer or the Open-Meteo terrain model
  • Trip curve coloured by score
  • Map of over-consumption by road
  • Anonymous leaderboard by road segment and car model (community data simulated for now)
  • Trip kept as long as the engine runs
  • Auto-start on Bluetooth connection
  • Android Auto

For developers

A built-in ELM327 simulator answers with real OBD frames: test on an emulator, no car needed.
